About Oakley

Old vines in the sand

Oakley, Contra Costa County

Oakley was founded in 1897, as a railroad was being built across its sandy plain, and named for the oaks that dotted the land. Almonds and grapes thrived in that sand, and a few vineyards of Zinfandel and Mourvedre planted more than a century ago still bear fruit between the subdivisions. Oakley became a city in 1999.
